How to Use a Shot Timer — PHOBINEY Guide

How to Use a Shot Timer — PHOBINEY Guide

Understanding how to use shot timer settings correctly makes competition-style and timed drill training more structured and measurable.

The PHOBINEY S-Timer supports personal practice, coaching, and exercises commonly performed with a USPSA timer, IDPA timer, or solo timing setup. It operates directly from the device without an app, phone, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi connection.

What Does the Timer Measure?

A shot timer records First Shot Time, Split Times, Total Time, Shot Count, and PAR Time results.

The device records sound and time only. It does not determine accuracy, hit location, target score, misses, or penalties.

Before First Use

The device uses a standard 9V battery. Open the battery compartment and remove the PVC insulation tab before first use.

The primary controls are:

  • GO — starts a timing session
  • — navigates or increases a setting
  • — navigates or decreases a setting
  • RVW — powers on the device and reviews results

How to Use Shot Timer Controls

This how to use shot timer guide follows the main sequence: power on, select a start mode, adjust detection, begin the drill, and review the results.

Step 1 — Power On

Press RVW to turn on the device.

To turn it off manually, hold GO and RVW together for two seconds. It also powers off after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity. Replace the battery when LOWBAT appears.

Step 2 — Select a Start Mode

Hold and together for two seconds to enter the settings.

Choose INSTANT for an immediate signal after pressing GO.

Choose DELAY for a randomized 2–3.5 second wait.

INSTANT works well for predictable or coach-operated practice. DELAY is more suitable for solo drills, reaction practice, and reducing anticipation.

Step 3 — Adjust the Sensitivity

The external sensitivity dial is on the back.

Turn it clockwise to reduce sensitivity and counterclockwise to increase sensitivity. Do not force it after it reaches its stop.

Start near the middle and perform a short detection test. Reduce sensitivity if echoes or surrounding sounds are recorded. Increase it if quieter sounds are missed.

Step 4 — Adjust the Buzzer Volume

Buzzer volume is adjustable from Level 1 to Level 6.

Levels 1–2 suit quiet indoor practice, Levels 3–4 suit general indoor sessions, and Levels 5–6 may suit outdoor or noisier environments.

Use only the volume needed to hear the signal clearly with your normal hearing protection.

Step 5 — Set PAR Time

PAR Time creates a defined training window using a start signal and a second signal. It supports draw practice, movement, transitions, and other structured exercises.

The setting can be adjusted up to 999.9 seconds. Use and to change the displayed value.

When PAR Time is active, First Shot Time is not displayed. Split timing begins after the first detected shot.

Step 6 — Start and Review

Position the device where the signal is easy to hear and the intended sounds can be detected. Press GO to begin.

After the drill, press RVW. Use and to review First Shot Time, Split Times, Total Time, and Shot Count.

Using It as a USPSA Timer

A USPSA timer helps you practice starts, transitions, split times, and stage-style runs.

Use DELAY for solo reactions or INSTANT when a coach operates the device. When using PHOBINEY as a USPSA timer, review First Shot Time, Split Times, Total Time, and Shot Count.

Set the USPSA timer to DELAY for unpredictable starts. Review the USPSA timer data after each string. You can also combine the device with PAR Time for structured exercises.

The device cannot identify A-zone hits or calculate match penalties. Review target scoring separately.

Using It as an IDPA Timer

An IDPA timer can support defined strings, consistent starts, transitions, and practice within a target window.

Use the IDPA timer with PAR Time when you want defined start and end signals. DELAY makes the start less predictable. When using PHOBINEY as an IDPA timer, compare several repetitions instead of relying on one result.

Review the IDPA timer data alongside target results. The device records raw timing information, while points, misses, and penalties must be calculated separately.

Using It for Solo Timing Drills

The timer provides a clear start signal and a structured practice window without live ammunition.

Set the timer to INSTANT for predictable repetitions or DELAY for reaction practice. Use PAR Time to establish a target completion window.

To detect a quieter mechanical click, turn the sensitivity dial counterclockwise and move the device closer to the sound source. Very quiet clicks may not be detected consistently, but the timer still provides useful start and end signals.

Before at-home timing, unload completely, remove live ammunition from the area, check the chamber and magazine well, choose a safe direction, and use an appropriate backstop.
